History:

In 1912, the Telugu film industry originated with silent films under production and the first movie released was Bhisma Pratighna in 1921.This film was directed by Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu and his son R.S Prakash. Yaragudipati Varada Rao along with these two people has produced and directed dozens of films throughout the decade. They had established films exclusively on religious themes like Nandanar, Gajendra Moksham and Matsyavatar which are the most famous films of them.

Later in 1931, H.M Reddy has produced the first Telugu film with audible dialogue, Bhakta Prahlada. Silent films after turning into audible films popularly known as ‘Talkies’, has grew very quickly in number and fanbase. Lavakusa is the first major commercial success film in 1934. It is directed by C. Pullaiah in which Sriranjani and Parupalli Subbarao are lead roles. This film had attracted more viewers and it is a big celebration time for talkies and we should remember the efforts of pioneers like Dhundiraj Govind Phalke popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke. He is the one who made 1st silent film ‘Raja Harischandra’ in 1913.Raghupathi Venkaiah who hailed as father of Telugu cinema is the first exhibitor in the south and bought cronomegaphone, the first projector machine to exhibit short reels way backing in 1910 and reproduce sound by disk system. Venkaiah after traveling all over the south established star of East Studios better known as glass studio to produce silent films.

In 1936, Telugu film directors had moved away from religious and mythological themes by seeing the mass appeal of film. In the same year a film focusing on social issues was released under the direction of Krithiventi Nageswara Rao, Prema Vijayam. As social film had got successor, dozens of other films based on the same concept had released. Many Telugu films increasingly focused on societal problems like status of Untouchables and the practice of giving dowry. Notably 29 films out of the 96 films released between 1937 and 1947 had social themes.

British Raj has imposed a limit on the use of filmstrip due to the outbreak of World War2. They had reduced filmstrip from 20,000 to 11,000 feet in 1943.It is a sharp reduction from the 20,000feet which had been common till then. Before this ban had made, an important shift has occurred in the industry that independent studios formed, actors and actresses then by had signed to contracts limiting who they could work for, and   from then onwards films moved from social themes to folklore legends. These changes are done from Balanagamma in 1942. Gemini Studios has produced these film fantasy elements of cultural lore. From 1947, nearly all the films are produced by studios with contracted actors.
